Payble is the platform your council uses to accept payments online. This guide explains how your payment details are saved, protected and used, so you can pay with confidence.
Saving your details
When you make a payment, Payble can securely save your card or bank account details. This makes it easy to pay future notices or set up scheduled instalments without re-entering your details each time. When you save a payment method, you'll be asked to agree to Payble's Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy, which explain how your information is handled and kept safe.
Can I pay without saving?
Yes. If you'd prefer not to save your details, choose a one-off card payment. Your card is used for that payment only and is removed automatically afterwards. This option is available for card payments only. If you're paying by bank account, your details need to be saved as part of how those payments are processed.
How your card details are stored
Payble never stores your full card number or security code (CVV). When you enter your card, the details go directly to a specialist third-party security provider and never pass through Payble's own systems. Your card is then replaced with a secure reference code (sometimes called a "token"). This code can only be used to process payments you've authorised, and is useless to anyone else.
Payble keeps only the basic details needed to show you which card is saved: the card type, the last 4 digits, the expiry date and the cardholder name. Payments are then processed through your council's bank/gateway.
How your bank account details are stored
If you pay by bank account, Payble stores your BSB and account number so your payments can be processed. These details are encrypted (scrambled so they can't be read without a secure key) and are only ever shown in part, never in full.
Industry security standards
Payble meets the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). This is the global standard that every business handling card payments must follow, and Payble is assessed against it every year. The third-party provider that secures your card details is also certified under this standard. Payble's security is also tested regularly by independent experts.
How your information is protected
- While it's being sent — everything sent between your device and Payble is encrypted, the same protection used by online banking.
- While it's stored — saved information is encrypted, with extra protection on the most sensitive details.
- Where it's kept — your information is held in secure data centres in Australia.
Logging in with a one-time code
You don't need a password to log in to Payble. Instead, a one-time code is sent to you each time you log in.
- You'll receive a 6-digit code by SMS, email or WhatsApp.
- The code expires after 5 minutes and can only be used once.
- If too many incorrect codes are entered, or too many codes are requested, further attempts are slowed down or blocked to keep your account safe.
- Once you're logged in, you'll stay signed in for up to 4 hours.
- You can also log in with a passkey (your device's fingerprint, face or PIN) if you've set one up.
| Tip: Never share your one-time code with anyone. It's only for you to log in to your own account. |
Can council staff see my payment details?
Council staff can see that a payment method is saved, but only in part. They can never see your full card number or full bank account number.
| Payment method | What council staff can see |
|---|---|
| Card | Card type, last 4 digits, expiry date and status |
| Bank account | BSB and last 4 digits of the account number |
Council staff can't add a card on your behalf or take an immediate payment from your saved card. Only authorised staff can make changes to a payment method, they can only access their own council's records, and every change is recorded.
Other ways we keep your payment methods safe
- A saved payment method can only be used by the person who saved it.
- There's a daily limit on how many payment methods can be added, to help prevent misuse.
- Automated protection blocks suspicious traffic and bots.
- The payment page is constantly monitored to make sure it hasn't been tampered with.
- Account activity is recorded so any unusual changes can be traced.
You're in control
You can update or remove your saved payment methods at any time through your Payble account.
